Geosurf and Smartproxy are two runners-up in our best residential proxy ranking. Both have similar pricing plans and features, but which one is best? Read our side-by-side comparison to find out!
Geosurf vs. Smartproxy: A Side-by-Side Feature Comparison
Geosurf 8.9 vs Smartproxy 8.7
|Pool size||2M residential IPs||10M residential IPs|
|Authorization method||Whitelisted IPs||Credentials and whitelisted IPs|
|Number of users||x||Limited|
|Protocols||HTTP||HTTP and HTTPS|
Well, most of it is pretty clear cut – Smartproxy has a significantly larger proxy pool, with its 10 million IPs. Geosurf’s network is almost five times smaller at 2.1 million IPs. This also reflects in the number of locations that the two proxy providers offer.
Geosurf offers only two-thirds of Smartproxy’s locations, with 130 countries to Smartproxy’s 190. That last number does sound like “the whole world”, which shows how wide Smartproxy’s network really is.
Geosurf doesn’t let you have sub-users, while Smartproxy offers a limited number of sub-users for your account. This number does depend on the pricing plan you choose – we used the Advanced plan, and it let us create 10 sub-users. Smartproxy also offers more IP validation options than Geosurf. If you are buying proxies for several projects or users, you will be better with Smartproxy.
Only Smartproxy supports the encrypted HTTPS protocol. This is a MUST if you care about security and privacy.
Last, but not least, Smartproxy has a more flexible support with live chat and email, while Geosurf only offers email support. In our full Geosurf review we mentioned that it took Geosurf around 1 hour to answer us via Skype, which was a bit slower that Smartproxy. You can find out more details in the full Smartproxy review.
As you can tell, the 8.9 ratings for Geosurf and 8.7 for Smartproxy fall really close. But how do their proxy networks look performance wise?
Geosurf vs Smartproxy: Performance Comparison
The success rate for both Geosurf and Smartproxy is 84%, which is a top-notch result! Geosurf did have a bit more blocked IPs during our test, but Smartproxy received about the same percentage more in connection errors. No clear winner here.
Comparing Geosurf and Smartproxy to Other Proxy Providers
|Geosurf||Smartproxy||Other Proxy Providers|
Again, there is no clear winner among the two, but Geosurf and Smartproxy are beating the industry average by a wide margin in all metrics.
Requests to the Most Popular Targets
|Target||Geosurf||Smartproxy||Other Proxy Providers|
Both providers achieved great results with popular targets. Results for Booking.com, Facebook and Instagram were very close for both competitors (85-90%), Geosurf performed better that Smartproxy for Aliexpress, Amazon and Yandex. Even so, Geosurf had real trouble with Google and Wayfair. Geosurf’s performance with Wayfair was the only result that was below the industry’s standard. At 67% Geosurf was over twenty percent behind Smartproxy.
Overall, this pair of proxy providers beat the industry averages by a nice margin. Geosurf had better results for more targets, but really struggled with Wayfair, falling 5% below the industry average.
Performance by Concurrent Connections
We ran a concurrent connection test by gradually increasing the number of connections and put a huge load on the proxies. See our full Geosurf and Smartproxy reviews to find more information and graphs from our concurrent connection tests.
You can see that Geosurf handled our test slightly better than Smartproxy. Both providers performed with a stable 83-84% success rate up to 200 concurrent connections. Smartproxy’s success rate dropped off by a few percents with more concurrent connections. This is understandable due to a much larger proxy network size.
|Geosurf||Smartproxy||Other Proxy Providers|
|Avg. response time||6.61||4.85||7.78|
Smartproxy dominates the response time comparison with only 4.85s response time. Smartproxy was 2.93s faster than the industry average and 1.76s faster than Geosurf. Do note that Geosurf still has a better response time than the industry average.
Both providers offer pricing plans per GB, which means that your price will depend on the amount of traffic you will be using. Smartproxy has one of the cheapest entry-level proxy plans on the market with only $75/month for 5GB.
To make the comparison fair, we will compare 20GB plans from both providers. Geosurf offers this as its starter plan for $300/month, with a cap at 20GB and any extra bandwidth at $15/GB. Smartproxy offers a 20GB plan for only $200/month. This means that Smartproxy is the more affordable option. Also, its $75 plan is a lot more affordable as a starter plan. Smartproxy is definitely the more flexible provider in terms of pricing.
Why Geosurf is better than Smartproxy?
Quick answer – both Geosurf and Smartproxy perform better than the industry average. Smartproxy does perform slightly better in response time (speed), IP pool size and price, but Geosurf beats it in performance tests making Geosurf the better option of the two.
